Applied Materials’ Statement Regarding Ex-Employee Found Guilty in Criminal Trade Secrets Case

On August 24, 2021, a federal jury in San Jose, California reached a verdict finding a former Applied Materials employee guilty of eleven counts of possession of stolen trade secrets related to Applied’s MOCVD technology. Applied Materials is grateful for the jury’s careful consideration of this case and for its determination of the most important issue before it: that Applied’s technology is valuable and was properly protected as trade secret by the company. The jury’s findings harmonize with a pending civil case based on the same trade secret theft, in which Applied contends that the technology in question is extremely valuable and rigorously protected by the company.

Applied Materials is the leader in materials engineering solutions used to produce virtually every new chip and advanced display in the world. "At Applied, our innovations make possible a better future, and our intellectual property is our lifeblood," said Teri Little, Chief Legal Officer and Corporate Secretary of Applied Materials. "We are committed to vigorously protecting our trade secrets and those of our trusted partners, including by seeking redress in state and federal court, as necessary, to protect those trade secrets, as we did in this case."
