Goals and Progress
- 100% of our energy globally comes from renewable sources by 2030, with an interim goal of 100% in the U.S. by 2022
- 50% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 CO2 emissions by 2030, from 2019 baseline
- 27% of our global and 60% of our U.S. energy comes from renewable sources
- Scope 1 and Scope 2 CO2 emissions increased 5% from 2019 baseline due to unprecedented demand for semiconductors. We are working to address this impact.

The impacts of climate change, including wildfires, floods, and extreme weather events, are increasingly disrupting lives and businesses. Combatting a warming climate requires urgent and collective action. We are committed to significantly reducing our impacts by bringing improved efficiency across our global operations, using cleaner, renewable energy, and enabling groundbreaking technology innovation.
Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions
Applied Materials' Scope 1 and 2 emissions totaled approximately 115,300 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MT C02-e) in 2020, a 5% rise from actual 2019 numbers. The increase was driven primarily by unprecedented demand in the semiconductor industry that drove production and business growth.
We have committed to setting the targets through the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) and are on track to reach our goal of quantifying our Scope 3 emissions inventory by 2022.
Energy (Renewable Energy)
Applied is working to achieve our goals of 100% renewable electricity use in the U.S. by 2022 and globally by 2030 by sourcing renewable energy in three ways:
- On-site solar power generation at our facilities in Austin, Texas; Sunnyvale, California; Xi'an, China, and Singapore.
- Virtual power purchase agreements and certificates for solar, wind, and other renewable energy generating projects.
- Direct purchase of renewable energy from a utility provider
Environmental Health and Safety (EHS)
We consider environmental impact in every significant decision we make across our operations. We are guided by the six principles of our Environmental Health and Safety Management System:

Waste and Recycling
Our sites across the globe manage waste reduction, reuse, and recycling programs, setting site-specific targets that follow the ISO 14001 framework. Targets are reviewed on an ongoing basis and scored annually, helping us reduce our solid waste and increase the reuse and recycling of product and packaging materials.
While our operations are not high-volume water consumers, Applied is committed to using water efficiently throughout our global operations.
Our efforts to conserve water include:
- Water recycling and reuse for applications that do not require potability
- Designing water-efficient products
- Rainwater collection for use in landscaping or non-production needs
- Drought-tolerant landscaping and smart irrigation
